Create a facet searchandising rule

When viewing items in a category or collection, users can apply facets, or filters, to refine the displayed items. For example, if browsing a Dress category, a shopper could filter to view dresses with a certain length, made of a certain material, and featuring a specific color or pattern.

With facet searchandising rules, merchants can control which items are slotted during these filtered shopping experiences. For example, when a user filters dresses to look at blue, cotton, mid-length dresses, a merchandiser can slot specific dresses in that filtered results set.

Note

At this time, companies can create facet searchandising rules for Browse category and Collection pages only.

How can I use a facet searchandising rule?

  • Promote specific brands with light roast ground coffee items for users searching for light roast ground coffee.
  • Slot a set of men's t-shirts for users who filter by gender in the New collection.
  • Promote a set of contemporary chandeliers for users who selected the contemporary facet option in the style facet group for the Lighting category.
  • Slot specific Brembo brake discs for users who filter the Brake Discs category for the brand Brembo.

Create a facet searchandising rule

Step 1: Choose where to apply the rule(s)

  1. Select Workspace in the side menu of the Constructor dashboard, then select Searchandising.
  2. Select + Add New Rule in the top-right corner of the page.
  3. On the pop-up, select Browse.
  4. Choose Category or Facet.
  5. Next, select the checkbox to the left of the category or facet you wish to searchandise. You can only define facets for a single category or facet.

Step 2: Define facet set

Next, define the exact filtered experience for the searchandising rule(s) you wish to create.

  1. Select + Add facets in the bottom-left corner of the pop-up.
  2. On the following screen, select the checkbox to the left of each facet you wish to searchandise for.
    • Note: You can select more than one checkbox; however, doing so further defines the filtered experience. For example, selecting XL and red equates to a filtered experience that only shows red XL items.
  3. Selected facets experiences appear at the bottom of the pop-up. You can remove a facet by selecting the X to the right of the facet name, or select Remove all to remove all selected facets.
  4. Select Start searchandising in the bottom-right corner of the pop-up to continue to creating your rules.

Step 3: Add rule(s)

  1. Select + Add Rules & Content on the left side of the page.
  2. In the Rerank section, select Slotting.
    • Note: At this time, only slotting rules are available to add. Slotting rules allow you to place items in a specific position on a results page.
  3. On the left side of the page, locate the slot you wish to edit and select + Add.
  4. In the field provided, enter the item ID or item name. A drop-down list will display matching items as you type.
  5. Select the item you wish to slot in the chosen position.
  6. Repeat steps 2-5 if you wish to slot additional items.
  7. When done, select Add in the bottom-left corner of the page.
  8. To save your slotted rules, select Save Rules in the top-right corner of the page.

Drag and drop available

Want to quickly slot items? Drag and drop item tiles to their desired position to slot the item. Youā€™ll see the side menu update to reflect the slotted item in the corresponding position.

Navigate to additional facet searchandising rules

To improve upon the merchandiser experience, Constructor makes it easy to navigate between rules for faceted experiences within a category or collection and create new ones, all from a facet searchandising page. This helps improve a merchandiserā€™s workflow by eliminating excessive navigation steps.

  1. Select Refined with facets beneath the browse category or collection title.
  2. To edit an existing faceted experience, locate that experience and select the pencil icon at the far right of the row. This will allow you to edit the faceted experience, such as adding a new facet (i.e., adding XL to the filtered experience "red") or removing an existing facet (i.e., removing the XL option from "red + XL").
  3. To delete rules for an existing faceted experience, locate that experience and select the trash can icon at the far right of the row. Doing so will delete all existing rules for the specific facet set.
  4. To create rules for a new faceted experience, select Add facet set at the bottom of the list. This will launch a pop-up where you can define a new facet set for the category or collection then proceed to creating rules.

Impact of existing searchandising rules

Merchandisers regularly create rules on the root level of a Browse category or collection. For example, a beauty retailer slots a new hair serum in the #1 position of the Hair Care category.

Those merchandisers want to know: Will rules created at the root level impact a filtered experience?

Letā€™s walk through a couple of examples.

Example 1

A beauty retailer slotted a new hair serum, Item A, in the #1 position for the Hair Care browse category. Later, they decided to create searchandising rules for the filtered experience Hair Care > Serums.

Would results for this filtered experience show Item A slotted in the #1 position? Yes. Since Item A falls within the applied filters, it would show in the results.

Merchandisers have a few options in this situation:

  • They can choose to keep Item A slotted in the #1 position.
  • They can move Item A to a new position.
  • They can slot a different item, Item B in the #1 position.

What does the user see? Say the retailer decided to move Item A to position #4 for the filtered experience Hair > Serums and slot Item B in position #1. If a shopper simply went to the Hair Care category page, they would see Item A in position #1. However, if the shopper filters the Hair Care category to view Serums, then they would see Item A in position #4 and Item B in position #1.

Example 2

Letā€™s start with the same example as the first: A beauty retailer slotted a new hair serum in the #1 position for the Hair Care browse category. Later, they decided to create searchandising rules for the filtered experience Hair > Hairspray.

Would results for this filtered experience show Item A slotted in the #1 position? No. A hair serum would be filtered out of the results set once the user refines their browse session by the facet Hairspray, and so the hair serum in the #1 position would not show for the user.
