Manage searchandising rules

Learn how to review and make changes to existing searchandising rules

Searchandising rules allow merchandisers to influence the final ranking of items by boosting or burying items based on criteria (e.g., brand, category, price, etc.), manually slotting specific items into certain rank positions, and similar actions.

With searchandising rules, merchandisers can influence rankings to help achieve short-term goals, such as promoting specific items or brands, by bumping or hiding specific items regardless of their original ranking.

Merchandisers can create searchandising rules for Search, Autosuggest, Browse, and Collections, as well as on a global level.

In this article, we walk through managing existing searchandising rules.

View existing rules

  1. Select Workspace in the side menu of the Constructor dashboard, then select Searchandising.
  2. At the top of the listing, choose the product you wish to view rules for:
    • Search & Autosuggest: View searchandising rules for individual search queries.
    • Browse: View searchandising rules for individual browse categories or facets pages.
    • Campaigns: View searchandising rules for multiple search queries, browse categories, or facets pages.

Search for and filter existing rules

Search

  1. Select the search icon in the top-right corner of the page to expand the search field.
  2. From there, you can enter your search criteria:
    • Search: Enter the search query you wish to locate.
    • Browse: Choose the browse category or facet you wish to view.

Filter

  1. Select Filters in the top-right corner of the page.
  2. On the pop-up, define your filter criteria:
    • Rules: Choose to view manual or automatically generated rules (automatic), or both (all).
    • Rule types: Choose which rules you wish to view, or select all. Options include boost, bury, slotting, blocklist, and more.
    • Conditions: Choose to view rules meeting a specific condition. Options include:
      • Slotting rules needing review: Potentially outdated or ineffective rules that require reassessment.
      • Aged slotting rules: Slotting rules that have been active for a long time and should be revisited to confirm they are relevant and beneficial.
      • Underperforming slotting rules: Rules that negatively impact key metrics (like clicks or add-to-cart rates) and should be evaluated.
      • Expired rules: Rules that have passed their defined end time and are no longer active or influencing search and browse results.
    • User: Choose to view rules edited by a specific user. You can search for a user by their name or email address.
  3. Once done, select Update Filters in the bottom-right corner of the pop-up.

Review change history

Each shopping context, such as browse page or search query, displays Modified by information that includes both a user and the date and time the changes to one or more rules within the context were made. Which columns to reference will depend on the rule type.

  • Automatic rules
    • Use the Modified by AI column to view when Constructorā€™s AI last changed the automatic rule(s) for a specific search query, browse category, or facet.
  • Manual rules
    • Use the Modified By column to view which user last changed the manual rule(s) for a specific search query, browse category, facet, or campaign.
    • Use the Modified by User column to view when the corresponding user last changed the manual rule(s) for a specific search query, browse category, facet, or campaign.

For example, in the Sweaters & Fleece example pictured above, the Constructor AI last made changes to one or more of the 5 automatic rules on December 4, 2024. The user kevin@constructorlast changed the one manual rule on January 13, 2025.
